7. திருவெம்பாவை

                                       THIRUVENBAVAI

(திருவண்ணாமலையில் அருளியது - சக்தியை வியந்தது)

(THIRUVANNAMALAIYIL ARULIYADHU-SAKTHIYAI VIYANDHADHU) 
(வெண்டளையான் வந்த இயற்றவிணை கொச்சகக் கலிப்பா) 

(VENDALAIYAAN VANDHA IYATTRAVINAI KOCHHAKA KALIPPA)

The saint MAANIKAVASAGAR went to THIRUVANNAMALAI. He saw it and thought over that this hill is once stood as a fire form before NAANMUGAA and THIRUMAAL to prove his supremacy of real god.

          God filled the heart of MANIKKAVASAGAR, the time is MAARGAZHI TAMIL month. It is a cool month. The ladies in THIRUVANNAMALAI got early and dip in the cool pond and chant god’s songs and then went to temples .On seeing it he got much happy and sang the song THIRUVENBAVAI.

          The spinsters got early and went house to house to wake up the other spinster and go to pond and get bath there and then they thinking of the LORDESS PARVATHI in their mind and sing PAVAI songs.

          THIRUVENBAVAI means: The mighty power of PARVATHI is praised by ladies.

          In the previous verse NEETHAL VINNAPPAM he has separated from god and got distress and sorrow.

          He appealed to the god not to let him away, if god let him he will laugh at you, curse you and so on request him and got anger on him and pray for because of separation the sorrow increases.

          In this poem he forgot that he is a man and got the statues of ladies and got love on god and praise by verses at the time of bathing, plucking flowers tholnokam ADUTHAL, UNTHI PARALTHAL and SUNNAM EDITHAL.

          In this way the SIVA devotees experience ripe form and sings so many verses. The first one is THIRUVENBAVAI.

AADHIYUM ANDHAMUM ILLAA ARUM PERUM

ஆதியும் அந்தமும் இல்லா அரும்பெருஞ் 

God has no beginning and end. He is nearer to all the rarest objects and bigger than other bigger objects

JYOTHIYAI YAAM PAADA KETAEYUM VAAL THADANGAL
சோதியை யாம்பாடக்கேட்டேயும் வாள்தடங்கள் 

The god is in the bigger light form we all praise him by songs. On hearing it the light emanating bigger eyes you have

MAADHAE VALARUTHIYOO VAN SAEVIYOO NIN SAEVITHAAN
மாதே வளருதியோ வன்செவியோ நின்செவிதான் 

My dear spinster you are yet sleeping whether your ears are not hearing our songs

MAADHAEVAN VAAR KAZHALGAL VAAZHTHIYA VAAZHTHOLI POAI
மாதேவன்வார்கழல்கள் வாழ்த்திய வாழ்த்தொலிபோய் 

SIVA is god’s god whose long mighty feet. We are praising the feet it is the sound of praising

VEEDHIVAAI KETTALUMAE VIMMI VIMMI MEI MARANDHU

வீதிவாய்க் கேட்டலுமே விம்மிவிம்மி மெய்மறந்து 

Going all around the streets the lady who is hearing this sound the lungs are gone fast movement and then got fainted

PODHAAR AMALIYIN MEL NINDRUM PURANDU INGAN
போதார் அமளியின்மேல் நின்றும் புரண்டு இங்ஙன் 

Her bed is filled with flowers she rolled down from it and fell down

EATHAENUM AAKAAL KIDANDHAAL ENNAE ENNAE
ஏதேனும் ஆகாள் கிடந்தாள் என்னே என்னே 

He has no use she got fainted and got into coma stage what it is what it is

EADHAE EN THOZHI PARISELORE EMBAAVAAI
ஈதே எந்தோழி பரிசேலோர் எம்பாவாய். 155 

We pray for you is it your state of stillness what is your character is tell us

Five types of fire are: 1.Space fire 2. Body fire 3. Mental fire 4. GNANA fire 5. SIVAJYOTHI fire. These are given by THIRUMOOLAR

AADHIYUM ANDHAMUM ILLAA ARUM PERUNG JYOTHI:

          THIRUMAAL and BRAHMA say that they alone are prime god. They quarrel for each other to get supremacy.

          So they decided to find out (who is the prime god) the SIVA’s head and feet so BRAHMA taken the annaparavai (ANNA bird) and flies to see the head of SIVA.

          THIRUMAAL has taken the form of pig and excavated the land to see the feet of SIVA. They searched for so many UGAAS (innumerable years). They are unable to see it. They go tired.

          At that time SIVA taken the form of big fire and on seeing it the two got frightened and feared. They accept that SIVA is the PRIME god non else. This place is called THIRUVANNAMALAI.

          The inner darkness and outer darkness is removed by ARUMPERUM JYOTHI

PAASAM PARAN JYOTHIKU ANBAAI IRAA PAGAL NAAM

பாசம் பரஞ்சோதிக்கு அன்பாய் இராப்பகல்நாம் 

While we are talking day and night my love is all to go to the light form to god only (SIVA)

PESUM POTHU EPPOTHU IPPODHAAR AMALIKAE
பேசும்போ தெப்போ(து) இப் போதார் அமளிக்கே 

Now you have put your love only on the flower bed, so her friends asked

NESAMUM VAITTHANAIYOO NERILAIZHYAAI NERILAIZHYEER
நேசமும் வைத்தனையோ நேரிழையாய் நேரிழையீர் 

You have now put your love to bed in reply you have adorned gold ornaments which had raised sound

CHEECHI IVAIYUN SILAVO VILAIYAADI
சீசி இவையுஞ் சிலவோ விளையாடி 

On reply she chid her friend is it the place to play with words and cursing with words. It is god’s place please talk with sense

EASUM IDAM EEDHO VINNORGAL EATHUTHARKU
ஏசு மிடம்ஈதோ விண்ணோர்கள் ஏத்துதற்குத் 

Who I am? Those DEVAS pray SIVA they are hesitated to pray SIVA I am not at all

KOOSUM MALAR PAADHAM THANDHU ARULA VANDHU ARULUM
கூசும் மலர்ப்பாதம் தந்தருள வந்தருளும்

DESAN SIVALOKAN THILLAI CHITRAMBALATTHUL
தேசன் சிவலோகன் தில்லைச்சிற் றம்பலத்துள் 

The lord SIVA is in five form. He has abode in SIVABURAM, he is residing at THILLAI THIRU CHITRAMBALAM

EASANAAR KANBAARYAAM ARAELOR EMBAAVAAI
ஈசனார்க் கன்பார்யாம் ஆரேலோர் எம்பாவாய். 156 

We are only intimate to lord SIVA and no one else who has ever existed in GNANA space

MUTTHANNA VEN NAGAIYAAI MUN VANDHU EDHIR EZHUNDHEN
முத்தன்ன வெண்நகையாய் முன்வந் தெதிரெழுந்தென் 

You are always in laughing form your teeth are like pearls. Hitherto you have always lays from bed and you came as a first person and others follow you

ATHHAN AANANDHAN AMUDHAN ENDRU ALLUURI
அத்தன் ஆனந்தன் அமுதன் என்று அள்ளூறித் 

You call god as your father he is in happy form, he is in AMUDHAN so on you praise the god will like a tit bits (sweet)

THITHIKKA PESUVAAI VANDHUN KADAI THIRAVAAI
தித்திக்கப் பேசுவாய் வந்துன் கடைதிறவாய் 

You talk like a sweet candy but now you came and unlock the door (the person who comes first asked her)

PATHUDAIYEER EESAN PAZHA ADIYEER PAANGU UDAIYEER
பத்துடையீர் ஈசன் பழ அடியீர் பாங்குடையீர் 

The sleeping girl replies you are true devotees of god, you are the old disciple of god you have good manners such a type of person you are

PUTHADIYOM PUNMAITHEERTHU AAT KONDAAR POLLAADHO
புத்தடியோம் புன்மைதீர்த்து ஆட்கொண்டாற் பொல்லாதோ 

We are new devotees and new slaves to god could you remove our ignorance and take me in your fold is it not acceptable one (we are new person)

ETTHO NIN ANBU UDAIMAI ELLOM ARIYOMO
எத்தோநின் அன்புடைமை எல்லோம் அறியோமோ

We all know your false words you are true devotee of god you can’t deny it

SITTHAM AZHAGIYAAR PAADAARO NAMSIVANAI 
சித்தம் அழகியார் பாடாரோ நஞ்சிவனை 

Those who are in clear mind they come sing the songs of SIVAPURANAM

ITTHANAIYUM VENDUM EMAKAELOR EMBAAVAAI
இத்தனையும் வேண்டும் எமக்கேலோர் எம்பாவாய். 157

We have come here to wake you up but you cursed us is it right to us they told it to the sleepy girl

 

ONNITHIL EANAGAIYAAI INNAM PULARNDHINDRO

ஒண்ணித் திலநகையாய் இன்னம் புலர்ந்தின்றோ 

The radiant emanating pearl like teeth you have is it not yet get away night (the day has dawn)

VANNA KILI MOZHIYAAR ELLORUM VANDHAARO
வண்ணக் கிளிமொழியார் எல்லோரும் வந்தாரோ 

The sleeping girl asks the other who is standing in their front door, all of them come here please tell me you are talking like a parrot

ENNI KONDULLAVAA SOLLUKOM AV VALAVUM
எண்ணிக்கொண்டுள்ளவா சொல்லுகோம் அவ்வளவும்

கண்ணைத் துயின்றவமே காலத்தைப் போக்காதே

விண்ணுக் கொருமருந்தை வேத விருப்பொருளைக் 

You are AMUDHAM to DEVAS GNANA form of VEDAS you are the concept of it

KANNUKU INIYAANAI PAADI KASIDHULLAM
கண்ணுக்கு இனியானைப் பாடிக் கசிந்துள்ளம் 

Those who are good to our eye sight we praise him with melting heart

UNNEKKU NINDRURUGA YAAM MAATOM NEEYAE VANDHU
உண்ணெக்கு நின்றுருக யாம்மாட்டொம் நீயேவந்து 

We are praising the god with moving heart so it is not the time to count the heads and inform you any how

ENNI KURAIYIL THUYILAELOR EMBAAVAAI
எண்ணிக் குறையில் துயிலேலோர் எம்பாவாய். 158 

You may come yourself and if there is any deficiency you may once again go and get asleep

MAALARIYAA NAAN MUGANUNG KAANAA MALAIYINAI NAAM
மாலறியா நான்முகனுங் காணா மலையினை நாம் 

The SIVA is not aware of THIRUMAAL and haven’t seen by BRAHMA- who is in the form of rock

POL ARIVOM ENDRULLA POKKANGALAE PESUM
போலறிவோம் என்றுள்ள பொக்கங்க ளேபேசும் 

We have fully known said by false words always

PAALAARU THEN VAAI PADIREE KADAI THIRAVAAI
பாலாறு தேன்வாய்ப் படிறீ கடைதிறவாய் 

You have taken such a nice form of honey and milk words which are not true in a way please open the door

GNAALAMAE VINNAE PIRAVAE ARIVARIYAAN
ஞாலமே விண்ணே பிறவே அறிவரியான் 

You cannot realize lord SIVA feet, but you can realize all the land space other upper and under worlds but it is difficult to understand his feet

KOLAMUM NAMMAI AAT KONDU ARULI KOTHAATU
கோலமும் நம்மைஆட் கொண்டருளிக் கோதாட்டுஞ் 

God consider us as a person and he put us in cradle swing and then rocks the cradle. He has so many good mannerism we praise him with the songs

SEELAMUM PAADI SIVANAE SIVANAE ENDRU
சீலமும் பாடிச் சிவனே சிவனேயென்(று) 

We call loudly by his name SIVA SIVA

OLAM IDINUM UNARAAI UNARAAIKAAN
ஓலம் இடினும் உணராய் உணராய்காண் 

You did not realize that you are sleeping you can see it yourself

EALAK KUZHALI PARISAELOR EMBAAVAAI
ஏலக் குழலி பரிசேலோர் எம்பாவாய். 159 

It is the character of that sleeping girl who adorn her hair with fragrance

MAANAE NEE NENNALAI NAALAI VANDHUNGALAI

மானே நீ நென்னலை நாளை வந்துங்களை 

Yesterday you said that I will come tomorrow first and then I wake up you

NAANAE EZHUPPUVAN ENDRALUM NAANAAMAE
நானே எழுப்புவன் என்றலும் நாணாமே 

Your statement is not true that you did not first came and awake up us

PONA THISAIPAKARAAI INNAM PULARNDHINDRO
போன திசைபகராய் இன்னம் புலர்ந்தின்றோ 

Where is your words gone? But now the day dawns

VAANAE NILANAE PIRAVAE ARIVARIYAAN
வானே நிலனே பிறவே அறிவரியான் 

The rarest rare person SIVA who is not identified by the DEVAS the people of this land, the other world people

THAANAE VANDHU EMMAI THALAI ALITHU AAT KONDU ARULUM
தானேவந் தெம்மைத் தலையளித்து ஆட்கொண்டருளும்

வான்வார் கழல்பாடி வந்தோர்க்குன் வாய்திறவாய்

Your flesh won’t melt we have come over here to

At least you are singing for others praising the lord SIVA

ANNAE IVAIYUM SILAVO PALAVA MARAR

அன்னே இவையுஞ் சிலவோ பலவமரர் 

O my god you have such a type of above character, the DEVAS won’t realize the god

UNNARKU ARIYAAN ORUVAN IRUNSEERAAN
உன்னற்கு அரியான் ஒருவன் இருஞ்சீரான் 

We won’t realize him he has unique principal

CHINNANGAL KETPA SIVANENDRAE VAAI THIRAPPAI
சின்னங்கள் கேட்பச் சிவனென்றே வாய்திறப்பாய் 

In the god procession, on hearing the drum sound your lips will chant SIVA SIVA now what is happened to you, you did not open your mouth

THENNA ENNA MUNNAN THEESER MEZHUGU OPPAI
தென்னா என்னா முன்னம் தீசேர் மெழுகுஒப்பாய்

ஏழில் இயம்ப இயம்பும்வெண் சங்குஎங்கும் 

The instrument NAGASHVARA raises the sound and the white conch also raises the sound

KAEZHIL PARANG JYOTHI KAEZHIL PARANG KARUNAI
கேழில் பரஞ்சோதி கேழில் பரங்கருணை

கேழில் விழுப்பொருள்கள் பாடினோம் கேட்டிலையோ

You have evolved from the clear sect you are god’s servant

The ponds are full of flowers the bees are going round and round in that pond to suck honey.We are here to take bath, while taking bath we jump into it and the water rises because of the sound of MUGEAR

KAIYAL KUDAINDHU . KUDAINDHU UN KAZHAL PAADI
கையாற் குடைந்து குடைந்துஉன் கழல்பாடி 

By swimming under going in the water and then praise your feet by songs

You have small bump, the broad eyes are chocked with black colour you are UMADEVI’s husband

உய்வார்கள் உய்யும் வகையெல்லாம் உயர்ந்தொழிந் தோங் 

Those who are true devotees got hold of your feet protection in that way we also tried to get hold on you

எய்யாமற் காப்பாய் எமையேலோர் எம்பாவாய். 165

So you save us without getting into weak preserve us bless us 

AARTHA PIRAVI THUYAR KEDA NAAM AARTHU AADUM
ஆர்த்த பிறவித் துயர்கெடநாம் ஆர்த்துஆடும் 

To break the birth sorrow which has bound us, we praise the glory of god with dance and shouting god’s name

THEERTHAN NAL THILLAI CHITRAMBALATHAE THEEYAADUM
தீர்த்தன் நற் றில்லைச் சிற்றம்பலத்தே தீயாடும் 

You have pure GANGA water in the holy place of CHITRAMBARAM abode in the space of GNANA you have taken fire in one hand and dances

KOOTHAN IVVAANUM KUVALAYAMUM ELLAMUM
கூத்தன்இவ்வானும் குவலயமும் எல்லாமும் 

The dancer god in this land and space and all of us

KAATHUM PADAITHUM KARANDHUM VILAIYADI
காத்தும் படைத்தும் கரந்தும் விளையாடி 

He who creates the world preserves it and destroys it. It is jolly play of lord SIVA

VAARTHAIYUM PESI VALAI SILAMBA VAAR KALAIGAL
